Birthday BBQ Catering in Tel Aviv: What a Milestone Party Costs

TL;DR

A birthday with a live grill splits into two formats and the price gap between them is the whole decision. Up to about ten guests it is a private fire chef: ₪1,900 for two, ₪2,700 for four, ₪3,500 for six, each extra guest ₪400. From 20 guests it becomes event catering at ₪290 per guest all-inclusive, with a ₪6,700 event minimum that binds up to about 23 people, so a 40-guest 50th is ₪11,600 and a 60-guest party is ₪17,400. Every figure includes 18% VAT with no service charge or tip. Children are billed at 55% of a portion, which matters enormously at a kid's party: 30 children plus 12 adults is 42 heads but 28.5 billable portions, or ₪8,265. The trap nobody warns you about is the cake. If the meal is kosher, a cream or butter birthday cake cannot be served after meat, so the cake has to be pareve and it has to be ordered that way weeks before anyone thinks about it.

How much does a birthday with a private chef actually cost?

It depends almost entirely on one number, and it is not the menu. It is how many people are coming, because a birthday for eight and a birthday for forty are not the same product bought in different sizes. They are two different formats with two different price structures, and the honest version of this answer gives you both rather than a single per-head figure that quietly assumes one of them.

Up to about ten guests it is a private fire chef. One chef, one fire, a multi-course meal cooked in front of the table and served in waves. ₪1,900 for two, ₪2,700 for four, ₪3,500 for six, and each guest beyond that adds ₪400. That covers the menu built with you in advance, the premium cuts, the starters, sides and sauces, the chef, the grill, the charcoal, service through the evening and the cleanup afterwards. Nothing is rented separately and there is no setup fee.

From 20 guests it is event catering: a crew rather than a chef, roughly one person per 15 to 20 guests, cooking in waves across the whole evening. ₪290 per guest all-inclusive, ₪315 if the menu carries two premium cuts, ₪340 with three or more, and a ₪6,700 event minimum. So a 30th for 30 people is ₪8,700, a 50th for 40 is ₪11,600, and a big garden 60th is ₪17,400. Every one of those numbers already includes 18% VAT, and there is no service charge and no expected tip on a crew you hired directly.

You can run any of this yourself on the calculator on our homepage before you speak to anyone. It is the same model that produces the actual quote, which is the point of putting it on the page.

Why does a 15-guest birthday cost the same as a 23-guest one?

Because of the event minimum, and because a birthday guest list is the single least stable number in catering. This is the part worth reading before you invite anyone.

Between roughly ten and twenty guests there is a genuine gap in the format, and any caterer who gives you a smooth answer there is guessing. It is too many people for one chef working a single fire at one table, and it sits below the ₪6,700 event minimum, which binds up to about 23 people. In plain terms a 14-guest birthday pays the same floor as a 23-guest one. That is not a penalty aimed at you; a small event carries almost exactly the same fixed cost as a large one, because the van, the setup, the crew call and the cleanup do not shrink when the guest list does.

What makes this specifically a birthday problem is that birthday lists grow. A quiet dinner for ten becomes fourteen when three couples ask to bring someone, and fourteen is the worst number on the whole table above: too big for the private chef format, and paying the 23-guest floor. If you are anywhere near that band, the cheapest move is to decide early which side of it you are on. Eight is a lovely private dinner. Twenty-three is a proper party at the minimum. Fourteen is the one number to avoid landing on by accident.

The practical version: tell us the number you actually expect rather than the number currently on the invite list, and say out loud whether it is likely to drift up. Final headcount can move until a few days before the event, because the shopping happens close to the date, so an honest estimate early costs you nothing and a wishful one can cost you a format change.

How are children counted at a kid's birthday party?

At 55% of a portion, and at a children's birthday this is the difference between a sensible quote and a silly one.

Fifty-five percent is the usual convention in the trade and it applies to the food, never to the consumables, because a child still uses a plate, a cup and a chair. The arithmetic is worth seeing rather than trusting. Thirty children plus twelve adults is 42 heads, but 30 children reduce the billable count by 30 × 0.45, which is 13.5 portions. That leaves 28.5 billable portions, and at ₪290 that is ₪8,265 rather than the ₪12,180 that 42 full portions would have cost. A smaller party of 20 adults and 10 children is 30 heads and 25.5 billable portions, or ₪7,395.

So the single most useful thing you can put in your first message is the split: how many adults, how many children. Not an approximate total. People routinely quote us a headcount that includes twenty kids and then wonder why the number came back high, when saying 'twenty of them are eight-year-olds' would have moved it by thousands of shekels.

A children's party changes the menu as much as the price. Kids eat the grill half of the menu and largely ignore the steaks: pargit, kebab, merguez, wings, skewers and arayes disappear, while the picanha is eaten almost entirely by the adults. It is worth loading the menu accordingly rather than paying for premium cuts that a nine-year-old will politely decline. It also changes the shape of the evening, because children eat early and eat continuously, so food coming out in waves off the fire suits them far better than a single seated service.

What happens to the birthday cake if the meal is kosher?

It has to be pareve, and this is the single most common thing that goes wrong at a kosher birthday, because the cake is the one dish the host arranges separately and therefore the one nobody checks.

A kosher meat meal means no dairy anywhere in it, and that does not stop when the main course is cleared. A cream cake, a butter sponge, a cheesecake or an ice cream cake cannot be served after meat, and the classic Israeli birthday cake is a cream cake. Every other part of the evening can be handled at short notice; a cake cannot, because the good pareve bakeries want the order days ahead and the beautiful one you had in mind at the patisserie down the road is almost certainly dairy.

There are three honest ways through it. Order a pareve cake, which most serious bakeries will make if you ask specifically and ask early. Move the cake to a separate later moment, which is what waiting periods after meat exist for and which works better than people expect at a party that runs long anyway. Or make the whole event dairy-free by design and treat the cake as part of the menu rather than an afterthought. Our own desserts are pareve for exactly this reason, and dessert is an on-request line quoted separately rather than folded into the per-guest price.

If the birthday is not kosher, none of this applies and you can bring whatever cake you like. The reason it earns a section anyway is that most people only discover the constraint on the afternoon of the party, standing in a bakery, which is the worst possible moment to learn it.

Can you cook on the actual date, or does the party have to move?

Usually yes, with two Israeli constraints that a foreign calendar app will not warn you about, and a birthday is the one event whose date genuinely cannot slide.

The first is Shabbat. We do not work on Shabbat, so a birthday falling on a Friday night or a Saturday daytime has to become either a Friday afternoon cook eaten hot off the grill before candle-lighting, or a motzei Shabbat party once Shabbat is out. The Friday afternoon slot is genuinely good and is the classic Israeli hosting window. The motzei Shabbat one works too, with the caveat that the crew cannot set up during Shabbat, so in summer the first food lands around 22:00 and the evening runs late.

The second is the holiday calendar, which moves against the Gregorian one every year, so a birthday that was clear last year can collide this year. The Tishrei run in September and October is the densest hosting season in the country and books out weeks ahead. Passover in the spring is the other pressure point. Yom Ha'atzmaut is the single biggest grilling day in Israel, and a birthday that falls on it needs to be booked a long way out rather than a fortnight before.

For an ordinary date, a couple of weeks is comfortable. For anything in those windows, a month or more. And if you are planning a surprise party, tell us at the quoting stage: the crew arrives well ahead to set up, a charcoal grill announces itself by smell across an entire building, and the arrival choreography needs to be planned rather than improvised at the door.

Will the space work, and what actually lands on the table?

The deciding factor for the space is ventilation rather than size. Charcoal produces smoke and carbon monoxide, so the grill stands somewhere genuinely open: a balcony that is open rather than glassed in, a roof terrace, a courtyard, a garden. There is no indoor version of this and any chef who offers one is a chef to decline. If the roof is shared it belongs to the va'ad bayit, so ask before you fix the date. Tel Aviv is dense enough that a rooftop birthday should be winding down around 23:00 on a weeknight. A photograph of the space sent on WhatsApp answers all of this faster than a paragraph of description.

On the food: premium cuts cooked to temperature over charcoal, plus everything around them. Entrecôte, picanha, tomahawk, sirloin, Denver and flat iron on the steak side; pargit, kebab, merguez, wings, arayes and skewers on the grill side. Starters, salads, breads, house sauces and hot sides come off the same fire. The meat is bought from named butchers rather than an anonymous supplier: Bat HaKatzav on Brodetzky 43 in Ramat Aviv, Meshek Lagziel and Roni Tassa's boutique butchery in Ramat Gan, and for mehadrin requests Atliz Lemhadrin on Tzora 3 in Kfar Shalem, which carries Badatz Machpud, Beit Yosef and Eda HaChareidis certification.

Kosher is available on request rather than a standing certification we claim, and it is worth being precise about that difference. A mehadrin birthday means an on-site mashgiach and a kashered grill, arranged per event and quoted as its own line rather than hidden inside the per-guest number. Whatever standard you need, the butcher's name and its certifying body belong in writing on your quote, and you can check that shop yourself against the Chief Rabbinate's public kosher business database before paying a deposit.

Guests who do not eat meat are a menu-building input rather than an emergency, as long as you say so when you ask for the quote. Named guests eat salmon, sea bass or denis instead of meat and are counted that way. We cover Tel Aviv, Gush Dan and the Sharon with no travel surcharge, which is why the calculator has no field for your address.

Frequently asked

How much does a birthday party with a private chef cost in Tel Aviv?

Up to about ten guests it is a private fire chef: ₪1,900 for two, ₪2,700 for four, ₪3,500 for six, and ₪400 for each additional guest. From 20 guests it is event catering at ₪290 per guest all-inclusive, with a ₪6,700 event minimum, so a 40-guest birthday is ₪11,600. All figures include 18% VAT and nothing is added on top.

What is the minimum number of guests for a birthday?

There is no minimum for the private chef format, which starts at two guests. Event catering starts at 20 guests, and the ₪6,700 event minimum binds up to about 23 people, so a 14-guest party pays the same floor as a 23-guest one.

Do you charge less for children at a kid's birthday?

Yes. Children are billed at 55% of a portion, applied to the food. Thirty children plus twelve adults is 42 heads but 28.5 billable portions, which is ₪8,265 rather than ₪12,180. Tell us the adult and child split in your first message rather than a single total, because it moves the number substantially.

Can we have a birthday cake if the meal is kosher?

Yes, but it has to be pareve. A kosher meat meal means no dairy, so a cream cake, butter sponge, cheesecake or ice cream cake cannot be served after the food. Order a pareve cake specifically and order it early, because good pareve bakeries need notice and most attractive shop cakes are dairy.

Can you cater a birthday that falls on Shabbat?

Not on Shabbat itself. A Friday-night or Saturday birthday becomes either a Friday afternoon cook eaten before candle-lighting, or a motzei Shabbat party once Shabbat is out. Setup cannot happen during Shabbat, so a summer motzei Shabbat party starts late, with first food around 22:00.

Can you do a surprise party without giving it away?

Yes, but plan it with us rather than around us. The crew arrives ahead of the guests to set up, and a charcoal grill is audible and very much smellable across a building, so the arrival timing and where the equipment waits need to be agreed in advance. Say it is a surprise when you ask for the quote.

How far ahead should I book a birthday?

A couple of weeks is comfortable for an ordinary date. For the Tishrei holiday run in September and October, around Passover, or on Yom Ha'atzmaut, plan a month or more ahead. Birthdays are the one event whose date cannot move, so a late request in a busy window is often a genuine no.

What do you need from me to quote a birthday?

The date, how many adults and how many children, the address or neighbourhood, what kind of space it is, whether it needs to be kosher and at what standard, and any allergies or guests who do not eat meat. A photo of the balcony, roof or garden answers more than a paragraph of description.
